San Diego is as gorgeous as California gets.  While January is the coldest month in San Diego, it is in the mid to high 60’s in the daytime and the average low of 50 at night.  For many this is not cold it is a nice break from freezing winter temps and humid climates.

Beaches and Coastline

San Diego has 70 miles of pristine sand along the gorgeous coastline.  Whether it is a stroll, sunning, surfing, kayaking, of body-boarding there are great beaches to choose from.

Tamarack Beach and South Ponto are the two closest beach locations to Carlsbad beach resorts.  Enjoy the amazing sunrise and sunsets at Tamarack walk, a few miles of oceanfront pathway.

Legoland

Legoland California is the perfect place to hit up with the family.  With over 60 rides and attractions made up of legos and the Sea Life Aquarium that is home to more than 5,000 creatures.  January is a slower time of the year for the park which means less time in line and more fun awaits.

San Diego Zoo

This world-renowned zoo is home to more than 3,700 animals and some are only at the San Diego Zoo.  With a guided tour bus and Skyfari Aerial Tram you can see the animals and the scenic views of the city, while there.

It is worth the day trip and only 30 minutes from Carlsbad beach resorts.  Swing by the Polar bear plunge, the koalas in the Australian Outback and the Elephant Odyssey.

Balboa Park

Home to 17 museums on 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is the nation’s largest urban recreational area.  The museums range from air and space to automobile, planetariums and geographic.  Everyone in the family will be ready for a great day of adventure.

The walkway between the museums has stunning architecture and gardens, with a fountain at one end and many times street vendors and performers.

Whale Watching

January is a great time to get some whale watching in.  San Diego is the perfect place to see these amazing mammals at their finest.  Whether it is a whale-watching excursion or from the shore, you will see the migration of the Gray Whale.  There are more than 20,000 whales that travel from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California.

Less Crowds, Great Deals

January is when many get back into the routine, which means that southern California beach resorts are a little less crowded.  Mid-January the California schools are all back in so the local attractions are quieter on the weekdays.  January is the start of a new year so consider celebrating it with a vacation to one of the most spectacular mild locations, sunny San Diego.
